Breaking Down Pinker’s Speech

I loved how throughout the speech, Pinker used humor to appeal to the audience and this is what really helped me to pay attention the whole time. The first thing that I took away from this was that Pinker told us as writers that sometimes it is okay to be wrong as long as we are clear in our writing. Most of the time, writers are perfect in what they are trying to explain but the delivery is just not clear so readers are left confused. As long as the writer can get the reader to understand then that is all that matters.

The second thing that I pulled away from this speech is that rules are forever changing and they are not set in stone. Especially when it comes to being grammatically correct because when it comes to language it seems as though it changes up so often.

The last thing that I took away from this speech is that he tells us writing is just not giving to you and most of the time you have to work on this skill in order to become better at it.

  1. I complete;y agree that writing is ever changing. I feel as though Pinker brought some great points to the surface and also made sure to let everyone know you can’t always be perfect.

  2. I agree with the fact that writing is not a given thing, but a skill that can be developed over time and improved with practice. This an important takeaway that Pinker thoroughly explains.
